Medical exemptions for the COVID vaccine

Dear Patients,

This message is to address the requests for medical exemptions that have been received because of the provincial announcement that Ontario residents will be required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 to access certain public places as of September 22 and the implementation of vaccination policies by various workplaces.

The physicians of the Eastern Ottawa Community Family Health Team (EOCFHT) would like to share with you the message from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario that “generally speaking, there are very few acceptable medical reasons to exempt a person from vaccination against COVID-19.”

Currently, there are only two reasons for exemption from COVID-19 mRNA vaccines (Pzifer and Moderna), which are as follows:
A severe anaphylactic or allergic reaction confirmed by an allergist or immunologist to a previous dose of COVID-19 vaccines or any of its components that cannot be attenuated.
A diagnosed episode of myocarditis or pericarditis after obtaining an mRNA vaccine.OCHS physicians will not issue an exemption letter unless any of the above reasons apply to your situation.
The COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, we strongly encourage our clients to get vaccinated. It is now clear that the fourth wave is predominantly affecting unvaccinated people. Let’s do everything we can to stop COVID-19.
For more information about the COVID vaccine and where to find the nearest location to receive it, follow this link https://www.santepubliqueottawa.ca/fr/public-health-topics/covid-19-vaccine.aspx.
In closing, we would like to remind you of our Zero Tolerance policy regarding abusive language or behaviour towards clinic staff. We always encourage respectful discussion and behaviour.
We recognize that these are difficult times in unusual circumstances, so let’s work together to defeat this pandemic.
